Notes supplied by Scott Callaway on 7-16-2000. The Cabarrus and Rowan County Census of 1850 (pg.94, Fam.# 1313) list Jacob Pahel living with his mother Polly Pahel in Rowan County, NC. Two sources, "A History of Rowan County, NC" and "North Carolina Troops:1861-1865, Infantry Vol. VI" list a Jacob V. Petchel as a private in Company A of the 20th Regiment, also known as "The Cabarrus Guards." This unit had previously been known as the 10th Regiment North Carolina Infantry (Volunteers) and changed by S.O. No. 222, A & I.G.O., dated November 14, 1861. The facts between these two sources vary, but the latter source is more extensive and states that he resided in Rowan County as a carpenter prior to being enlisted at "Radcliffe Battery" by Nelson Slugh on June 7, 1861 at age 24. He was mustered in at Radcliffe Battery on June 22, 1861. Jacob fought at Cold Harbor and was later wounded at Malvern Hill, VA on July 1, 1862. He was then listed as Absent Wounded or Absent on Light Duty through August 1864. He rejoined the company in Sept.-Dec. 1864 and was present and accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Courthouse, Va. on April 9, 1865. Army pay vouchers for Jacob indicate his pay as a private was $11.00 per month.
